Description

This is a 4 page copy of ‘The Polynesian’ which was issued on ships of the Matson Navigation Company and the Oceanic Steamship Company. This company is said to have introduced mass tourism in Hawaii, sailing from ports in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Australia and New Zealand to Honolulu, Hawaii. This specific newspaper does not have an issue date printed on it, but is believed to be from around 1935 – a year where other events such as Amelia Earhart’s flight from Hawaii to California were influencing and encouraging travel to and within Hawaii. These articles also touch upon the mixing of Hawaiian customs with those of the ‘new-world’. Additionally, it talks about Hawaii’s pineapple and sugar industry which contributed to the economic development of the islands. The newspaper also includes advertisements which allude to the increase in travel development and tourism interests in the country.
