Subject

Description
This is a typed government document featuring the impromptu remarks made by President Dwight Eisenhower regarding Hawaii becoming the 50th U.S State. The remarks are captured by James C. Hagerty, serving Press Secretary to the President and made on the 21st of August 1959, the same day Hawaii’s statehood was confirmed. President Eisenhower calls the event a ‘historic occasion’ and wishes Hawaii good luck in contributing to the strength of the United states. Within the text, it is mentioned that the President hopes for Hawaii to become closer to her sister states, alluding to the negatively received decision to annex Hawaii which brought it under U.S control and later, into the union of the states.
