Description
This source is a contemporary Hawaiian newspaper which demonstrates two significant cultural changes in Hawaii. Firstly, it marks the gradual decline of the Hawaiian language due to the increasing American influence in schooling and other areas of the islands society. Whilst this particular newspaper is in the Hawaiian language most Hawaiian newspapers were in English. This represents the imperialistic like takeover of Hawaii. Secondly it also shows that Hawaii was starting to incorporate features of American society such as the spread of information through media into its own culture. After the arrival of the missionaries Hawaii’s unique culture, that holds family and nature dear, was heavily diminished and replaced with American ideals. However elements of Hawaiians ideology have always remained.
