Description

Painted red wooden plank with modified roller blade wheels bolted to the underside of the plank. Roughly 15 inches long and 5 inches wide with a flat tail and rounded nose. The words ‘Roller Derby’ are in a handwritten italic sporty white font contrasting the bold capitalised SKATE BOARD.
In 1959 the rollerblade company ‘Roller Derby’ began the production of the first mass produced skateboard out of a factory in La Mirada, California. It was only available to buy from specific Roller Derby arenas and events in California up until 1960 when the product moved onto the shelves of thrift stores and stores like Sears throughout the country. While it was not the first commercially available skateboard, it was largely the most popular and mass produced at the time.
