Description

Description This object is the ‘Hollywood’ sign. Built in 1923, it stands at 30 feet wide and approximately 43 feet high and is made from metal sheets. The sign originally read ‘Hollywoodland’. The diary of Hollywood’s founder H.J. Whitley states that whilst walking on the hills he met a foreigner who was ‘hauling wood’, due to the accent Whitley believed he heard ‘holly wood’ inspiring him to name the place just so. The Hollywoodland sign was originally built for the housing development in Hollywood hills, until it fell into disrepair in 1940 and was restored as ‘Hollywood’ in 1978, showing the change in the area from being a residential to industry based.
