Description

A black and white Photograph showing President Dwight Eisen-hower signing the Hawaii Statehood Bill on March 18, 1959 which made The Territory of Hawaii The State of Hawaii and made it the 50th US State.
Eisenhower had wanted to make Hawaii a US state since his Presi-dential Campaign in 1953, however decided to make Alaska a state first due to its beneficial oil supply. Although it did face opposition from congress, especially Southern lawmakers they eventually re-lented and Eisenhower then signed the executive order to make Hawaii an official US state. Hawaii had spent over six decades campaigning for the right to be a US state so this day was celebrated nationwide.
