Description

This source is a printed newspaper from The Daily Colonist, a British colonial newspaper in British Columbia. One of the columns in this volume discusses an event in which two missionaries from the north-west are accused of teaching the indigenous peoples in the region that the government are “thieves and robbers”. They were being charged with disloyalty to the government by lying about who owns Indian land. This source highlights the problems that the colonial government was having in regard to land and its ownership at this time and foreshadows future disputes over ownership of land. This source fits into the theme of missionaries and their involvement with indigenous peoples, but also into the wider theme of land ownership.
