Description

This photograph is of Reverend James Roberts, a Kuper Island missionary, dressed in traditional First Nations dress that was given to him in 1864. The fact that this was given to him by the indigenous peoples suggests the relationship he had with them was amicable and trustworthy. Also, Roberts wanted to photograph this moment which suggests that this friendly relationship went both ways. Furthermore, taking photos in the mid-nineteenth century took a lot of effort so we can assume that Roberts felt a photo in First Nations dress was worthy of capturing on film. This fits in with the theme of missionaries, indigenous peoples and museum culture and photography.
