Description
This source is a handwritten oath from Arthur Ashford Wilder swearing allegiance to the 1893 provisional government. In 1893 the Hawaiian government was overthrown with the support of the American military. The monarchy was forcibly removed and Queen Liliuokalani was placed under house arrest. Following the coup all government workers were forced to sign oaths of allegiance to the new provisional government. This change in government was intended to result in the annexation of Hawaii by the United States. Although this didn’t happen till 1898 and was met with great resistance from Native Hawaiians with over 21,000 signing a petition against annexation.
