Description
This source is a map of the Pacific Ocean showing Hawaii at its center. The map highlights Hawaii’s importance to the US in that it was at the heart of all of America’s trade dealings in the Pacific at the time. The United States had access to Hawaiian grown goods such as sugar and rice due to the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875. This resulted in a great rise in the number of plantations in Hawaii. The treaty greatly benefited both states economies. The US also gained Hawaiian lands from the treaty which would later become Pearl Harbour. Hawaii was indispensable for America in terms of trade as its focal point in Pacific trade.
