Description

This source is a black and white photograph showing members of the ‘Screen Cartoonists Guild’ protesting outside of the RKO palace theatre that is showing Disney’s ‘The Reluctant Dragon’. The marchers include both men and women holding up signs. Due to the failures of Pinocchio and Fantasia, the Walt Disney Company began to lay off some of its employees and wage cuts were applied. However, disarray fell due to the wage gaps and privilege allowances occurring between the top animators and the rest of the work force. Consequently, many of the employees walked out and went on strike in May 1941. The strike lasted five weeks. This source reveals the political unrest that occurred in the area.
