Description

This Editorial Cartoon by N.H.Hawkins appeared in the Saturday Sunset Newspaper on the 24th August 1907, it is a black and white cartoon depicting White Immigrants being welcomed into Canada comparatively Chinese Immigrants, are being kept out by a fence despite their attempts to break into Canada.

This cartoon clearly advocates the exclusion of Chinese immigrants in favour of White European Immigrants. This cartoon was published during a time in which anti-immigration sentiment towards non-white immigrants namely those from Asian origins was widespread. To further contextualise the cartoon was printed a month prior to the Vancouver Anti-Oriental Riots from 7th to the 9th September which further solidified the anti-immigrations attitudes. This source when considered within a wider context provides evidence of the public opinion and the material shaping this opinion particularly since the cartoon was published in a well circulated newspaper with wider readership.
