Black and White Photograph, showing Mary Greyeyes bowing for a blessing ceremony by an Indigenous Chief who is stood above her.

She became the first woman from Aboriginal origins to join the Canadian Forces, and was often photographed as a representation of native peoples inclusion in Canadian Forces however she faced much discrimination during her times in the barracks. The Photography is staged, Mary Greyeyes was offered a fresh uniform and lunch in exchange for this photograph which she accepted. Through contextualization of a photograph which in this case attempts to show in inclusion of Indigenous people into Canadian Forces a more complex understanding regarding not only the role of indigenous women but also the prejudice they faced.
