Description
This source is a newspaper article from The Daily Colonist, a colonial newspaper that originated in the middle of the 19th century. This source highlights how medicine was an important factor in converting Indians to Christianity. It suggests that, after a meeting at a missionary conference, the introduction of colonial medicine and the establishment of hospitals is an important step in abolishing “the superstitious power of the Indian doctor”. This highlights the cultural differences between missionaries and the indigenous peoples and the ignorance of missionaries when attempting to convert the indigenous peoples to Christianity. Spirituality and traditional healing methods are and were an inherent part of Native American culture and so this source emphasises the lack of respect for this culture and disinterest in combining the cultures. This relates to missionary experience in British Columbia in the late 19th Century.
