Description

This is a letter addressed to Sir John Pakington, secretary for war and the colonies of Lord Derby’s administration in 1852, from A. Colvile, the deputy governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company – at the time of the letter in 1852, one of the most powerful members of HBC’s London Committee. The letter includes the talk of typical HBC business matters, such as labour, wages, land tenure, and the settlement of Vancouver Island, along with its many matters. This letter is very useful in understanding the settlement of Vancouver Island, the workings of HBC as a business, the relationship between the Indians and HBC as well as the role Reverends and HBC’s many business branches, including the fur trade, took in contributing to the community. It also implies the extent of HBC’s success, which was an important aspect of the development of British Columbia in the nineteenth century.
