Description

This is a page from the newspaper, The Daily British Colonist on 25/09/1860. The newspaper is based in Victoria, Vancouver Island, including a variety of sections, such as, ‘Advertisements’, ‘Miscellaneous’, ‘Notices’, ‘Removals’, ‘Auction’, ‘Dry & Fancy Goods’ and many more. This is useful as it gives us an insight into the wider picture of everyday life in nineteenth century British Columbia, specifically in Victoria, V.I. In the context of the fur trade, the article on the second page of the newspaper, titled ‘Trade of the North-West Coast’, is very useful in showing the extent of which Hudson’s Bay Company monopolised the fur trade. It also provides us with an understanding of the relations between HBC and the Indians, as well as the workings of the Company, an example of its profits at Fort Simpson and its license of trade with the Indians. This source will be useful for the study of microhistories.
