Description

This photo taken outside of ‘Ioani Palace in Honolulu shows American and Hawaiian draped with big USA letters in the center. In the foreground men dressed in suits and hats can be seen watching the ceremony, and in the background, people standing on the balcony looking at the crowd.

This photo indicates the moment the Hawaiian Act, passed in congress on the 30th April 1900, and ratified on the 14th June 1900, formally made Hawaii a territory of the United States. The Act redefined the political structure of Hawaii and created a Governor, a non-voting delegate and chief justices. It replaced the Provincial government and indicated the end of the Hawaiian monarchy. Hawaii remained a territory of the United States until it became a state on the 21st August 1959.
