Dublin Core

Title

Letter from Pelly to Grey

Subject

British Columbia
Oregon Territory
Hudsons Bay Company
Fur Trade

Description

The latter denotes an enquiry to British governance, by a representative of the Hudson Bay company, about the situation of their company and its Fur trading rights in relation to the 1846 Oregon treaty and the land acquitted to British territory. The treaty was between the U.S and Britain, which divided up the land near the Columbia river between the two powers. The British governance cautiously analyze the letter and decide to invite a company representative for a more detailed meeting with the British governance to further explain its intentions and legal rights in deliberating on the issue of their trading rights. In general, the motions put forward by Pelly in the letter are rejected but Britain seems open to talks. The letter really opens on our theme of trading and how complex trading missions were especially in context of the recent American revolution.
