Description

An image of the Huntington Beach Pier where a surfing competition, the 1963 US Open, is taking place. There are various surfers riding waves close to the shore and there are some surfers emerging from the water onto the beach after completing their runs. A very large crowd of people are stood on the beach spectating the event and making way for the surfers emerging from the water. You can also see an even larger crowd stood on the pier looking down on the surfers which could also imply that there may be many more people behind the camera when this image was captured.
The U.S. Open was called the West Coast Surfing Championship when it was established and was first held in 1959. In 1964 it became known as the United States Surfing Championships.
