Description

This is a pineapple shipping crate which was used to transport pineapples. It was packed by the Pearl City Fruit Company in Honolulu in the early 20th century. George Lycurgus was the man who founded the Pearl City Fruit Company in 1892. He was a Greek American businessman. Lycurgus with the help of Peter Camarinos, developed their own pineapple enterprise. It is believed that the Greeks were the first to invent refrigerator compartments which made the transportation of fruit more accessible to remote places and therefore made the island very wealthy. The significance of this object shows the processes and methods used by these companies to distribute their products far and wide.
