Description

This black and white photograph was taken on March 11th 1901. Original size of image is believed to be 1066 by 744 in its full size. The photograph shows the exterior of the Moana Hotel, soon after the hotel opened to the public. The Moana Hotel was the first hotel in the region of Waikiki and shows the Americanisation of the country with the hotel featuring the large windows and arches that seem typical of American hotels built and open in the few decades before the Moana Hotel. The hotel was built by the Matson Navigation Company, who are credited with introducing tourism to the country by building this hotel amongst others, and owning ships which docked in several ports in mainland America, Australia and Hawaii. This further demonstrates the influence of America on Hawaii. It shows Hawaii is thinking past transportation development and towards building tourism in the country.
