Description

One of the articles in the paper concerns Christmas. It talks about the celebration of the birth of Christ, which is a central part of Christianity but not Hawaiian religion. Through writing about Christmas in a Hawaiian newspaper, it shows that Hawai’i was becoming Americanised through changes in religion. This is particularly useful for consolidating research on Missionaries in Hawai’i and the lasting effects that they had upon the islands; as without their involvement in the 1800’s, Christmas and Christianity would not have grown in Hawai’i. This also shows the spread of Western influence over Hawai’i, through exporting a Western tradition.
