Description

This newspaper article assesses the governmental mismanagement of British Columbia and Vancouver Island’s structure as colonies. The article saliently concludes that foreign trade for New Westminster and Victoria will be diminished, and Vancouver Island will lose political and property rights. The newly amalgamated colony will want the self-government in Washington Territory. The Colony of British Columbia resulted from the combination of Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia in 1866, which is the same year of the newspapers publication. We can read the voice of the European settlers and their dissatisfaction with the decision from London. This source relates to the historical issue of empire and the British management of its colonies. British rule is presented as ‘tyrannical’, with a lack of political and economic consideration for the people of British Columbia.
