A handwritten letter from Mabel Hubbard Bell to her husband, Alexander Graham Bell dated Tuesday November 21, 1876 describing the events of her day. Mabel states the different modes of transportation used to travel to ‘Oakland across the bay’ from presumably the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, including a steamer, steam car and a horse-car carriage. Mabel also explains the sights she witnessed at the Warf in San Francisco where a Chinese vessel was being unloaded. She looks upon the ‘pretty Chinese women’ with their ‘quaint dresses and black hair’. Mabel also describes the treatment given towards the Chinese as she witnessed their trunks being shaken out and ‘shown no mercy’.
