Description
This is a picture of St. Saviour’s church taken in the 1880s. St. Saviour’s church is an Anglican church designed by the Rev. James Reynard. The initial Construction on the church began in 1868 but was not finished until after the church's first service was held on the 18th of September in 1870. This church was created by the Anglican missionaries who founded and shaped many towns such as Barkerville into a European structure to ‘develop’ and convert indigenous people towards Christianity during the 19th and 20th centuries. This source is significant as it reflects the theme of missionaries and their influence on the indigenous culture and religion. Structures such as this church would have a visual and cultural impact on the indigenous people for many years to come.
