Description

The source is a map showing the railway belt across British Columbia.

The map contains a coloured key showing the different areas of the land. For example, Indian reserves, forest reserves and parks and most significantly the land disposed of by the provisional government. This is relevant as in 1930 there was controversy regarding the use of land and natural resources in the area of the railway belt depicted in the map which led to the transfer of land back to the province.

The main element of the map shows how the railway was essential in connecting the areas of the province. It shows the railway link from Kamloops to Vancouver. This demonstrates that the development of the railway provided an essential north-south route between interior communities and the coast.

The source shows the how the relationship between transportation and the economy is particularly significant to British Columbia’s geographic makeup.
