Description

This is a black and white photograph 35cm by 40cm portraying a female pioneer educator and philanthropist in British Columbia. The picture focuses on the religion of Christianity as sister Mary Providence is wearing a crucifix and holding onto a bible. Her garments cover her whole body and a nuns veil covers her head. Philanthropy was practised in provinces as a way of the rich giving to the poor through the means of charity from the church. A philanthropist was deemed as ideal situation for the inclusion of women as charity collection and caring was portrayed as an extension of maternal qualities. Women involved in Philanthropy in 19th century British columbia also used their knowledge and skills as an access into the elite society and institutions to further their knowledge.
