Description

his photograph shows a group of 3 settler men sitting with 2 Native American Women and 1 indigenous Child. One man can be seen being playful with another of the men and one of the women. In the background is a shored boat, with a small log cabin further in the distance. The Author, William Bolton, was a minister who also went on exploring expeditions. It could be assumed that this image was taken on one of his expeditions in which he and a Native group have come into contact. The way that both groups of people are sat indicates that they were somewhat comfortable in being around each other. What is sometimes assumed as a hostile relationship between two different groups, this image helps to show that there were reciprocal, genuine relationships between natives and settlers, even if only amongst individuals within those broader civilisations.
