A base map from the City of Vancouver Engineering Department with the City’s parks hand-coloured in green. The base map was created in 1978, with the hand drawing demarcating the City’s parks added in 1980. The map identifies city blocks, the Canadian Pacific, Canadian National and Great Northern Railway lines, golf courses, hospitals, schools, theatres and other structures. The original map highlights the championing of progress and modernisation, and the diversification of BC’s economy, industry and transportation networks and systems, in doing so principally overwriting the indigenous presence deeply connected with the British Columbian landscape. The highlighted parks, as enclaves of the natural world amongst the modern, hint at a recognition of all that was lost in the process of progressing western civilisation, and the alienating of Native communities that inhabited that land before. Thematically this map features colonial settlement, development of industry, technology and infrastructure, and the displacement of indigenous communities.
