Description

This British Foreign Office document, dated from March 1849, on Vancouver’s Island is an eight paged confidential document on the settlement and colonization of Vancouver’s Island. It includes the discussion of trade license laws, the North-West Territory, the Puget's Sound Company, treaties, grants and further governmental issues. In addition, there is ‘Resolutions of the Hudson’s Bay Company’ annexed, providing us with an insight into the requests of HBC for the settlement of Vancouver’s Island. This source is important and useful in providing us with information on the workings of the government and HBC, as well as the power relations between the two. The document also states the primary goal of HBC obtaining Vancouver Island, fitting into the context of the Fur Trade in nineteenth century British Columbia.
