This source relates to immigration rights in the territory of Hawaii after the period of Annexation. Oftentimes Asian marriage certificates were not validated in front of American judges, which lead to deportation. This source highlights that gaining an American marriage certificate could bolster someone’s claim to remaining in the territory of Hawaii. To a lesser extent, this source could be implicit of ‘picture brides’ who would come over and marry (usually) older men to gain a ‘green’ card to allowed into the territory.
