Description

This newspaper cartoon negatively portrays the Hawaiian home rule party. It places the leader of the party, Robert William Wilcox (identified by his moustache) at the center of the illustration, carrying ‘anti-Dole’ papers. In the background, other monkeys are carry briefcases. Coming out of the ‘jungle’ to put forward legislation to Congress.

This negative cartoon comes after Wilcox proposed decentralizing power away from the Governor of Hawaii, and giving the local people more rights. Including asking for a pension for deposed Queen Liliuokalani. Despite their efforts, the Home rule party’s attempts to create legislation largely went ignored. The legislation failed after Dole created a pocket veto against it. As a result, it was famously named, the ‘Lady Dog legislature’.
