Description

This is another part of a Shipping Manifest, this time of a passenger from the Philippines. This 22-year-old male was travelling aboard the President Cleveland Ship, on March 14 1924. This is an important document, as we know there were many jobs available to labourers who would work cheap, and wanted a better life than they were able to have in their native lands. Though the two are not related, we may read the desperation and the lack of knowledge about what it was actually like to work in Hawai’i, as in 1924, a Filipino labour organiser led a sugar strike on O’ahu, which eventually was able to target 23 of the 45 plantations in Hawai’i.
