Description

The source is an 11 page typed letter with a ‘Congress of the United States house of representatives Washington D.C.’ header. It is written on the 22nd of May 1947 from Norris Poulson to Thomas Parnell and names those believed to be communists working in Hollywood. The letter is written during the (second) Red Scare, a part of which was the phenomenon of McCarthyism. This was a time of political repression and fear of communism, whereby people were accused of being a Communist without proper evidence. There was a fear that those in Hollywood were spreading communist messages and pro-soviet propaganda through their films. As a result many were imprisoned or blacklisted meaning they were unable to gain other employment.
