Governor of the Territory of Hawaii
Hawaii.

Description

This is a letter written by President McKinley to Sanford Dole, nominating him as governor over the territory of Hawaii after the annexation. Dole was born in Honolulu to Christian missionaries, which perhaps influenced his ideological thinking in his later years. Sanford Dole was known to be very pro annexation and was keen to westernise the whole of Hawaii. In the process of doing this he was also destroying the Hawaiian monarchy and their culture, which he seemed to have no qualms in doing. I think this letter shows the eagerness of the US government, in ensuring someone would be in charge after the annexation.
