Title

Map of Hawaii, Hawaiian Islands

Subject

Hawaii
European exploration

Description

The 19th century map of Hawaii shows the 137 Hawaiian islands. Before European exploration, education was more skill based and home taught. This gives the map reader a good idea of how European exploration westernised education to create such a detailed map and also how the government developed under western influence to create surveys such as these. Under western influence, education thrived. This map shows the hills and the volcanoes of Hawaii to a precise height, giving the reader immense detail of the area they are exploring. This would not only educate the reader about the islands but also the precautions they must take when visiting the islands. Many white settlers during the early 1800’s were anxious about what they would find and who they would encounter in Hawaii. This government survey is somewhat of a remedy to this fear.
