Description

The Bible of Ka’ahumanu is particularly important when analysing the success of the missionary project. Ka’ahumanu, the favoured wife of King Kamehameha had major influence over the political and social systems of Hawaii. Thus, missionary women such as Bingham focused on gift giving to influential women such as Ka’ahumanu, with the incentive of royal religious conversion catalysing commoner conversion.
The gift of Ka’ahumanu’s bible was a prime example of gift giving in order to convert the Ali’i to Christianity. After Ka’ahumanu’s conversion, this Bible was written into Hawaiian text and taught to the masses. Missionary schools were opened nationally. This shows how the influence of the Ali’i was manipulated to catalyse the westernisation of the Hawaiian people
