Description

Queen Liliuokalani’s book was written during a time of great animosity between the United States government and Hawai’i as it was around the time of the US’ annexation of the land, and five years after her forced abdication. In the book she narrates her childhood, general life, the crimes she was charged with and the overthrow of the monarchy. Liliuokalani was Hawai’i’s last monarch and her ruling came to a violent and abrupt end, though her book is a beacon of light and testament to herself as a woman of colour. Many American anti-royalists wanted a Western Hawaiian government without the monarchy and painted Liliuokalani as an illiterate and sexually immoral woman. However, this book proved that Liliuokalani was very much so educated, fluent in English, and she presents herself in a dignified manner. The royal ties here with the West greatly contrast with Queen Emma and Victoria’s relationship.
