Description

This is a second edition, 104-page book of the ‘Memoirs of Henry Obookiah’, edited by Dwight after the death of Obookiah. He was a member of Yale College that developed a close relationship with Henry, assisting him in his learning of the English language and religion. Dwight collated his letters, journal/diary entries and a sermon delivered at his funeral to create the book on his life. Henry is particularly significant as he was one of the first indigenous Hawaiians to adopt Christianity and was inspired to spread it to his people. He triggered an interest in missionary projects in Hawai’i and after the release of his book, many missionaries were inspired to spread Henry’s message, of which Samuel Ruggles was one of them. Therefore, this book relates to the theme of Missionary Projects, as Henry Obookiah sparked an American interest in Hawai’i with his book establishing the motivations of missionaries.
