Title

Hawaiian Statehood Commemorative Stamp

Subject

Hawaiian Statehood
Americanisation

Description

This is a 0.84 inch by 1.44 inch postal stamp created by the Post Office Department. It was issued on the 21st of August 1959, in commemoration of President Eisenhower’s announcement of the decision to admit Hawaii into the United States of America, making it the 50th and final state in the union. It is noted that the stamp was initially printed 90,000,000 times. The stamp is red and white in colour and includes a map of the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, the figure on the left hand side of the stamp is a Hawaiian warrior, and on the right there is a five-pointed star. The inclusion of these two images on the stamp points to the connection of Hawaiian culture with America (represented by the star, similar to those on its flag), through the process of statehood.
