Description

This is Map 5 of a collection of Fire Insurance Maps drawn up of Honolulu in 1906. The collection of maps shows the various industries that are in Honolulu such as canning and slaughter houses. These wouldn’t have been traditional Hawaiian industries which shows outside influence. In Map 5 it shows the shopping district of Honolulu, some of the shops are clearly labelled ‘candy’ or ‘ice cream, both of which were mainly American inventions, showing that Hawai’i was becoming Americanised. This is an important source for understanding the economic development of Hawai’i from traditional occupations to the more Westernised version that existed in 1906; and could be useful when comparing Hawai’i’s economy prior to western ‘discovery’. Further to this, this map shows two separate movie theatres. Cinemas were a big part of American culture, and it’s clear this was imported over to Hawai’i.
