Subject

Hawai’i
conflict
world war one
militarisation

Description

This newspapers front cover focusses on World War One in particular America’s involvement and victories in Europe. Whilst it is not necessarily notable that a major conflict would be reported in Hawai’i it is significant that only the American effort is focussed on. It uses captions such as ‘America’s fighting allies’ and ‘Yanks smash enemy’s defences’, which put America in the spotlight and shows clear bias. The newspaper also contains information on New York Stocks, which more emphasis is put upon then Honolulu’s. This particular paper is useful for not only explaining the increasing dominance of the United States in all aspects of life, which demonstrates changes were occurring in all aspects of Hawaiian life after annexation; but also the gradual militarisation of Hawai’i with Pearl Harbour having been created in the early 1900s, culminating in it becoming a strong military base in World War Two.
