Description

This 12.3 by 17.4cm black and white photograph depicts a typical British Columbian family, dressed in Victorian style clothing. This may have been the family portrait within their household during the later stages of the 19th century. All of the six women are wearing aprons and netted long skirts which suggest this was their typical day to day attire for working. The photograph portrays an older lady partaking in the activity of knitting which would have been introduced through European intervention in British Columbia. It also portrays the lady in the top left hand corner holding a croquet stick. Activities such as croquet was a game favoured by the landed-gentry of 19th century England. The leisure activities of croquet and knitting featured in the photograph offer the reader an insight to typical leisure activities women would take part in during the 19th century in British Columbia.
